OEF Summary; Jan. 8, 2009: Troops in Afghanistan Target Bomb Networks, Nab 5 Militants

WASHINGTON, Jan. 8, 2009 -- Afghan and coalition forces detained five suspected militants yesterday during operations to disrupt the Haqqani and Taliban terrorist networks in Afghanistan’s Khowst and Kandahar provinces, military officials reported.
The forces netted four militants, including an alleged Haqqani commander, in Khowst province’s Bak district, southeast of here. The commander is suspected of facilitating suicide car bombings against civilians and coalition forces and aiding in the movement of foreign fighters to carry out attacks in the province.
In Zharmi district, west of Kandahar, coalition forces detained a suspected militant while targeting a Taliban sub-commander who reportedly directed and coordinated suicide bomb attacks against Afghan officials and civilians.
