Troops in Iraq Find Weapons Caches, Detain Criminals

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Feb 1, 2009 -- While conducting clearance operations Iraqi security forces confiscated a cache of weapons and detained criminals Jan. 30 throughout the Baghdad area.

ISF from the 2nd Battalion, 54th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, discovered an RKG-3 grenade in the Yarmouk neighborhood of northwest Baghdad Jan. 30 at approximately 1 a.m.

The ISF notified Soldiers from the 4th Battalion, 42nd Field Artillery Regiment, operationally attached to the 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad, who verified the weapon as an RKG-3 grenade.

An Iraqi army explosives ordinance disposal team responded the find.

At approximately noon Iraqi soldiers from the 4th Battalion, 22nd Brigade, 6th IA Div. discovered a weapons cache and notified Troopers from the 5th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd HBCT, 1st Inf. Div., MND-B, who responded to the scene to assist with area security and confirm the contents of the cache.

The weapons discovered included seven SPG-9 rocket mortars and 3,500 belted 7.62 mm rounds.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., IA soldiers serving with the 4th Bn., 22nd Bde., 6th IA Div. and Soldiers serving with the 5th Sqdn, 4th Cav. Regt., 2nd HBCT, 1st Inf. Div., MND-B, arrested two criminals, who are suspected of participating in robberies, improvised explosive device attacks, kidnappings, sniper attacks and planning attacks on voters during the provincial elections.

The criminals were moved to a local joint security station and will be turned over to the ISF.

“The Iraqi security forces and ‘Dagger’ Brigade units continuously patrol the Mansour district to provide a safe and secure environment for the Iraqi people,” said Maj. Koné Faulkner, 2nd HBCT spokesman, 1st Inf. Div., MND-B. “The ISF are stopping criminal activities, finding weapons caches and impeding the flow of weapons trafficking into northwest Baghdad.”
