FORT LEWIS, Wash., July 22, 2009 -- A woman is dead and a man is being treated after a shooting in the corridor area of the main post exchange here at about 11:20 a.m. PDT today.

The woman, a civilian vendor who worked at a kiosk in the corridor but was not an exchange employee, was pronounced dead after being evacuated to Madigan Army Medical Center. The man, a 59-year-old retired soldier from Lakewood, Wash., is receiving emergency treatment at Madigan for a gunshot wound to the head. Preliminary indications are that the man shot the woman and then turned the gun on himself, officials said.

The victim’s identities are being withheld, pending notification of their families.

Fort Lewis military police secured the scene, and people in the area were evacuated. The FBI has assumed jurisdiction of the ongoing investigation, with participation from Fort Lewis law enforcement and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command.

In a written statement, Fort Lewis officials expressed condolences to the victims’ families and commended the quick reaction by PX employees to evacuate the facility quickly without further injuries.

Fort Lewis chaplains responded to the scene within minutes to provide counseling, officials said.
