Wire: Gen. McChrystal Sends Afghan War Assessment to Pentagon
Off the Wire:
WASHINGTON, Aug. 31, 2009 -- Newswire services this morning reported that the top commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan has completed a 60-day strategic review of the war and that it is now being sent to the Pentagon and NATO headquarters.
A NATO statement released Monday said U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal reports the situation is "serious" but that success is achievable.
McChrystal says success, however, demands a revision of the current strategy.
The assessment was requested by the U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and NATO headquarters.
This is a developing story with more to follow.
