NBC Ranks Top Grocers; Take it all With a Grain of Salt
CLEANUP ON ASILE NINE
COMMENTLINE
Having been a connoisseur of fine fatty foods all my life, I just had to read the NBC Dateline report ranking the top 10 grocery chains.
I'll jump right in and say the story is bogus based on the fact that NBC ranked Lakeland, Florida's Publix as number three on the list of dirtiest stores. Having lived in Florida most of my life, and also having visited a bunch of Publix stores as a consumer, I am here to tell ya' the place is clean, the prices are good, and the food is fresh. In fact, the company must be doing something right because Publix is ranked by Fortune Magazine as number 56 of the top 100 companies to work for in America!
I won't mention names but I am also here to tell you I know of another chain based in Florida who had a store in Jacksonville that was closed and torn down after a couple of stock boys were caught urinating in the food. Heh, I still call the place 'Feces Foods.' You'll never see me darken the door of any store belonging to that grocery chain.
In any case, linked below for your amusement is the NBC Dateline story. Perhaps I'd take the Dateline folks seriously if they used a larger sample for the basis of their story.

We took our hidden cameras to 18 stores across the country whose health inspection reports indicated they had a history of critical violations.
The list
From the supermarket chain that kept things cleanest, to the one with the poorest performance in our survey [10 being the cleanest]:
10) Food Lion.
9) Wal-Mart and Save-a-Lot.
7) Costco and Sam's Club.
5) Winn-Dixie.
4) Kroger.
3) Publix.
2) Albertsons.
1) Safeway.

How safe is your grocery store?
In an unprecedented report, NBC News ranks the top 10 grocery chains in the country in Dateline's 'Supermarket Sweep'
(NBC) -- Americans spend nearly half a trillion dollars a year in the supermarket. In fact, most of us make a trip to the grocery store twice a week. While we wouldn’t shop in a store we didn’t think was safe (and there are tens of thousands of stores across the country that handle food safely), if there is one thing we’ve learned in Dateline’s year-long “Supermarket Sweep,” it’s that you can’t assume your grocery is as clean as it should be.
