Study Ties Political Leanings to Hidden Biases

COMMENTARY
Hmmmm.... here's a report on a study that paints Republicans as racists. We can't test the theory, however, because the research has yet to be published and we cannot not review the methodology.

Additionally, we don't know if the researchers themselves had implicit biases against Republicans. Nosek and Harvard psychologist Mahzarin Banaji, folks performing the studies, have given campaign contributions to Democrats.

That being said, read on.

NEWSLINE
For their study, Nosek, Banaji and social psychologist Erik Thompson culled self-acknowledged views about blacks from nearly 130,000 whites, who volunteered online to participate in a widely used test of racial bias that measures the speed of people's associations between black or white faces and positive or negative words.

Study Ties Political Leanings to Hidden Biases
(washingtonpost.com) -- Put a group of people together at a party and observe how they behave. Differently than when they are alone? Differently than when they are with family? What if they're in a stadium instead of at a party? What if they're all men? Read full story.

I'm curious as to why there weren't any studies done to see if blacks were racist against whites. Perhaps each race (black, white, hispanic, etc...) has an easier time associating positive concepts with their own likeness. Just watch any school children playing - the girls are always in groups and the boys are in groups. That doesn't mean that they hate each other...this whole story contradicts itself in the beginning anyhow, when one of the study's authors admits that even within their own family the political views are quite varied. I suspect that the family is probably of the same race. So, how does racism explain that?

"I'm curious as to why there weren't any studies done to see if blacks were racist against whites."

Well that should be obvious: Whites are the predominate voting bloc in this country, NOT blacks. Even if Blacks hold racists attitudes toward Whites at a higher rate, there is not a single state in the union where they are a majority, such that those racist ideals can be translated into election of a candidate. With Whites, of course, the opposite is true.

Incidently, it should be obvious that racists would tend to vote Republican. The Democratic Party is much more readily identified with Black voters and Black candidates. Why would any self respecting White racist align with THAT party? Add in Nixon's "Southern Startegy"; Ronald Reagan's "states rights" speech on top of the graves of Cheney, Schwerner and Goodman; Lee Atwater's "Willie Horton" ads; Jesse Helm's campaign against Harvey Gant; and GWBs trip to Bob Jones University . . . is there any question which party would be more comfortable for a White racist? So the real question is: which party would a White racist identify with, NOT whether Republicans are racist.
