Snow Aims to Ease Tensions Between White House, Press

WASHINGTON NEWS

TONY SNOWCOMMENTLINE
Fox News commentator Tony Snow is named White House press secretary.

Congratulations to Snow and Bush!

The decision to put a real journalist into the press secretary's position is a no brainer for Bush -- who at this point, has to be scrambling to keep his political legacy from becoming, as Fox pundit Bill O'Reilly so aptly described it, a Jimmy Carter presidency.

So Snow, in essence, will now become Bush's wartime conciliari who will take the pulse and the voice of fair and popular conservatism to the White House.

In any case, the White House press secretary job would be both challenging and interesting for any journalist attracted to the inner workings of the Washington power machine. As a contributing journalist, Snow's work is admirable. As a contributing cancer survivor, Snow's success is remarkable.

On another note, the move is sure to inspire even more venomous anti-Fox sentiment from liberal posers outside the beltway, who in their blissful ignorance, are unable to separate Fox's commentary from hard news. Note to posers: that just ain't the case; after sourcing reports from their on-scene correspondents, Fox, like everyone else in the biz, uses AP, Reuters, and Drudge to fill in the blanks. No matter how it gets spun, it just isn't a bad thing to move Snow's popular voice from the highest rated cable news outfit to a White House in the midst of a PR disaster.

In reality, Snow has the respect and support of peers, no matter their ideology, who share the fraternity of journalism and see Snow's role as press secretary as the positive move.
