Question: Prior to 11 September 2001, what terrorist organization was responsible for the most number of American deaths?
It's a difficult question for most and the answer may surprise you.
J. Cofer Black, the U.S Department of State Coordinator for Counterterrorism from 2002-2004, gives the answer:
"The answer to your question is in particular from the American perspective, if I can be allowed that. Before 9/11 the terrorist group that had killed more Americans actually was Hezbollah and with the catastrophic attacks of 9/11 Al-Qaeda moved up in that deplorable category as having killed more Americans."
Yep, it's Hezbollah.
It's the same Hezbollah that killed 241 U.S service members in Beirut. The same organization that destroyed our embassy in Beirut in 1983, killing 63. The group that again bombed our Beirut embassy in 1984, killing 2 U.S. soldiers. The same Hezbollah that kidnapped and killed numerous Americans through the 1980’s including Colonel William Higgins and CIA Station Chief William Buckley. And yes, the same organization responsible for the hijacking of TWA flight 847 in 1985. From the American Spectator.
Jeff Jacoby, columnist for the Boston Globe, writes, OPENING A security conference in Tehran on July 8, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad exhorted the Islamic world to mobilize against Israel and "remove the Zionist regime." People in the region are growing furious, he said. "It will not be long before this intense fury will lead to a huge explosion."
Four days later, Hezbollah terrorists staged a raid across Israel's northern border, kidnapping two Israeli soldiers and killing eight more. Over the next day, more than 120 rockets rained down across northern Israel.
Israel may be able to inflict a punishing defeat on Hezbollah, but regime change in Tehran will require American resolve. Will we muster that resolve before the mullahs get the bomb?
When former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III, the Democrats, unable to rise above the partisanship, can only frame their response in politics and typical anti-Bush rhetoric.

(seattletimes.nwsource.com) -- Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III and President Bush should say so. In an interview in Bellevue this morning Gingrich said Bush should call a joint session of Congress the first week of September and talk about global military conflicts in much starker terms than have been heard from the president.
