Fri Morning Open Thread

Returning to the Gallery of the Absurd, more news about Lebanon's own FEMA:

  • Reuters reports that Hezbollah handed out bundles of cash on Friday to Lebanese whose homes were damaged during combat.

"This is a very, very reasonable amount. It is not small," said Ayman Jaber, 27, holding a wad he had just picked up from Hezbollah of $12,000 in banknotes wrapped in tissue.

More news out of the Middle East:

  • The Washington Post reports for the first time in a generation, Lebanese troops, tanks and armored vehicles deployed in force Thursday into the country's south as part of a U.N. cease-fire that has so far calmed 33 days of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah militiamen.
  • Israel says it would be "difficult if not inconceivable" to accept nations which do not recognise its right to exist as part of a UN force in Lebanon reports the BBC.
  • Aljazeera reports that the leader of Lebanon's largest parliamentary bloc has said the Syrian president's attack on Lebanese politicians is worse than the destruction wreaked by Israel.
  • Israel has complained to Russia that Russian-made anti-tank missiles have reached Hezbollah guerrillas who used them against Israeli troops in south Lebanon, government officials said Friday reports AP via Fox News.
