Wire: 4 US Troops Killed in IED Attacks in Afghanistan
Off the Wire:
WASHINGTON, June 1, 2009 -- Newswire services reported this afternoon that the U.S. military said four American troops have died in two separate roadside bomb attacks in Afghanistan.
Military spokesman Col. Greg Julian said the two strikes happened Monday in different locations but "not too far from each other." He declined to say where the strikes happened because family members have not yet been contacted.
The four Americans are serving in eastern Afghanistan under the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
The Associated Press reported that the U.S. military has said that IED attacks are up 25 percent this year over the same period in 2008. The military predicts IED attacks to spike 50 percent this year after an expected increase in attacks over the summer.
This is a developing story.
