Wire: US State Department Urges Twitter Over Iran

Off the Wire

Off the Wire:

WASHINGTON, June 16, 2009 -- Newswire services reported this afternoon that even as President Barack Obama today claimed it would not be helpful if the United States was seen by the world as "meddling" in the Iranian election, the State Department contacted the social networking service Twitter over the weekend to urge it to delay a planned upgrade that could have cut daytime service to Iranians, a U.S. official said on Tuesday.

"We highlighted to them that this was an important form of communication," said the official of the conversation the department had with Twitter at the time of the disputed Iranian election. He declined further details, according to a Reuters report.

Just an observation here ... I'd be very wary of any so-called 'news' that may be gleaned -- supposedly from Iran -- through Twitter updates, or "tweets."

There's really no way to verify the claims.
