Wire: US Marine Killed in Combat-Related Incident in Iraq
Off the Wire:
WASHINGTON, July 19, 2009 -- Newswire services and Multi National Force - Iraq sources today reported that a U.S. marine was killed in hostile action on Sunday in Al-Anbar province, west of the Iraqi capital.
The Marine "was killed in a combat-related incident as a result of enemy action," a brief statement said.
Some of the main towns of Al-Anbar province, notably Fallujah, were strongholds of the insurgency against the U.S.-led troop presence until tribesmen and former rebels turned on the jihadists from 2006.
The latest death brings to 4,327 U.S. losses since the 2003 invasion, according to an AFP toll based on independent Web site icasualties.org.
