KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 14, 2010 -- A joint ANSF-ISAF patrol discovered 250 kilograms of ammonium nitrate and other IED making materials while clearing a compound in Marjah, Garm Ser district, Helmand province today.

Acting on a tip from a local resident, another ANSF-ISAF force discovered approximately 300 meters of detonation cord wrapped in plastic in a canal also in Garm Ser district, Helmand province today. The cord was transported to a nearby combat outpost for disposal.

A joint ANSF-ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache in Nad Ali district of Helmand province today. The cache consisted of two 155 mm artillery rounds, four pressure plates, blasting caps, and batteries. The munitions were destroyed on site.

An Afghan-international combined force captured a Taliban commander responsible for planning and leading IED attacks against Afghan and coalition troops in the village of Ahmadzay, Mohammad Agha district, Logar province last night.

The security force also found body armor and a fragmentation grenade.

No Afghan civilians or members of the combined force were harmed during the operation.

Another joint ANSF-ISAF patrol discovered a number of IEDs and bomb making materials in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province yesterday.

The cache consisted of a number of 82 mm mortar rounds and one IED composed of five daisy-chained rounds.

The force detained two suspected insurgents after a search of a nearby home revealed live and expended small arms rounds and several lengths of wire.

The devices were destroyed on site.

An ANSF patrol detained an insurgent who had a wheelbarrow-born IED in Kandahar city yesterday.

After his arrest the man provided information which led ANSF forces to a nearby house where more IEDs and IED fabrication materials were found. ISAF forces will assist ANSF in destroying the materials.

An Afghan-international combined force killed an enemy militant and captured another while pursuing a Taliban sub-commander in Kandahar province yesterday.

The combined force interdicted a vehicle in Kandahar's Panjwayee district near Fathollah. During the operation an individual from the vehicle displayed hostile intent to members of the combined force and was killed. The other man was detained.

A group of insurgents turned themselves in to Afghan Border Police in the Zargoon district of Herat province Friday.

The five men handed over their personal weapons which consisted of four AK-47s with four magazines of ammunition each and one RPG with three rounds of ammunition.
