OEF Update, Feb. 21, 2010: Operation Moshtarak

Dispatches from the Front

Dispatches from the Front:

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 21, 2010 -- Operation Moshtarak remains on track as the combined force continues to make progress. Activities continue in much the same manner as reported over the last 48 hours, with route clearance operations improving freedom of movement. There are reports from both Nad-e Ali and Marjeh of IED strikes, weapon finds and some small-arms engagements. In Marjeh, determined resistance is again reported in some areas. The Regional Command-South commander believes the clearing phase is progressing well and will take at least 30 days to complete.

Yesterday Governor Mangal said the delivery of governance is the most effective tool to defeat the enemy.

"The challenge is to get credible people in place to represent GIRoA from a place from which they can conduct the business of the state," Mangal said.

Yesterday four shops were open in the Naqelabad Kalay bazaar and were busy with many customers.
