Poll: Most Americans Support NSA Data Mining
COMMENTLINE
When the USA Today rehashed the NSA surveillance news story yesterday (if you recall, the story was originally broke by James Risen in the Times way back in Dec.), the mainstream media ran with the news and assumed Americans would be outraged. At a casual glance, it really looks like the whole thing was timed to help derail the Gen. Hayden nomination. Who knows?
The issue illustrates just how the anti-Bush agenda has devolved into both means and ends unto itself. The sad thing is that anti-Bush is no alternative to Bush. Americans simply have no choice in politics when the choice is between the Republican agenda and those whose only agenda is to hate Republicans.
The terrorists, not George Bush, are the enemy.
NEWSLINE
The new survey found that 63 percent of Americans said they found the NSA program to be an acceptable way to investigate terrorism, including 44 percent who strongly endorsed the effort.

Report: NSA Has Call Data On Millions
UPDATED: Poll: Most Americans Support NSA Data Mining
COMMENTLINE
It appears USA Today is hyping this story in an effort to sandbag President Bush's nomination of Gen. Michael Hayden to become the director of the CIA.
For a long time, most folks have assumed their calling records were private. However, a few months ago we learned that call records could be easily bought directly from telecommunications providers.
Frankly, after it became news how easy it is to buy our phone records, I pretty much assumed the NSA was gathering the information.
Reporters did not develop the story until now.
It stands to reason by coincidence that the information was leaked to the press by those who want the news to impede the Hayden nomination. (Hayden was head of the NSA in 2001 when the agency is reported to have started collecting data about phone calls.)
While it is mildly disturbing that the NSA has been almost freely compiling phone information Americans have perhaps mistakenly assumed was private, it is totally disturbing that information about this kind of top secret program has been leaked to the press by those holding high security clearances and charged with the duty of protecting our country.
NEWSLINE
[USA Today] reports that while the NSA program amassed the data, this program does not involve the NSA actually listening to or recording conversations, the newspaper reports. According to USA TODAY's sources, the NSA is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity.

Tension soars as Iran's president sends a letter to President Bush and Time magazine (delivered after Iran denied the Holocaust, then thretened Israel with one, run off nuclear inspectors and withdrew from civilized negotations) in a solid attempt at a smoke-and-mirrors tactic, tailor made to confuse the issue and invoke American guilt.

Captured Qaeda Document Shows Weakness
COMMENTLINE
I've been waiting for a few days this story to show up in the mainstream media.
The document in question, a review of Qaeda's strategy in Iraq, was captured with videos on April 16 near Yusufiya, just southeast of Baghdad. The document expresses Qaeda's hash criticisms of its own methods in Iraq.
It's both telling and unfortunate that the mainstream has neglected this story. Unlike the in-your-face images of death and human suffering in Iraq, news like that linked below makes up the larger backstory, which remains a mystery to most consumers of traditional media.
The document is presented in Arabic and translated into English.
NEWSLINES
"The policy followed by the brothers in Baghdad is a media-oriented policy without a clear comprehensive plan to capture an area or an enemy centre."
The document expresses criticisms of the car bomb and other "surprise attacks" that are "the main strength of the brothers in Baghdad."
